Japanese Ceramics and Ikebana Course
*Price per person

Serra da Lousã

Ceramicist Shirobey Kobayashi is in Portugal for the first time at the invitation of cerdeira - Home for Creativity to lead the Japanese Ceramics and Ikebana course. With a programme dedicated to ceramics and the creation of pieces, this experience offers a unique learning experience in wood firing and a deep immersion in ceramics and Japanese culture. The search for beauty and functionality to integrate into everyday life when serving food, tea or flower arrangements is the essence of Japanese ceramics.

During the course, Shirobey Kobayashi shares her philosophy of life based on simple things that enhance the aesthetic sense in life. She teaches how to integrate ceramics and natural beauty into everyday life through Ikebana and the values and care to be taken when plating food.

Participants will learn and practise ceramic techniques such as tebineri (hand techniques) and rokuro (potter's wheel) to create chawan vases and bowls. They will also take part in all stages of wood-fired cooking in the 36-hour Sasukenei - Smokeless Kiln. The programme also includes cooking a Japanese meal on the day the oven cools down. The course ends with a Japanese tea ceremony celebrating the lessons learnt.
